Situation
A battery validation team needed a new bench for a 400 V module. The request included charge-discharge cycling, transient events, logging, and future expansion. Several suppliers proposed regenerative or bidirectional hardware, while another proposed a programmable source and electronic load. The quotations used different voltage and current ratings, so the procurement team could not compare them directly.
What the team clarified
The review converted the request into an operating envelope: minimum and maximum voltage, charge and discharge current, continuous power, peak duration, current slew, reverse-energy expectation, cycle count, data rate, and facility conditions. It also identified system-level requirements for contactors, emergency stop, remote sense, cooling, grounding, and interlocks.
Procurement logic
Every supplier had to map the actual operating points onto the proposed instrument envelope and declare derating, parallel behavior, source-to-sink transition limits, grid requirements for regeneration, measurement accuracy, and software interfaces. The team asked for a sample automated profile and the resulting data file rather than assuming automation quality from a brochure.
Decision result
The comparison made the trade-off visible. A separate source and load could satisfy defined portions of the work, but the bidirectional option was evaluated on its actual cycling duty, energy return, heat, and integration implications. The final shortlist was based on proven operating points and safety architecture, not the largest headline rating.
