Situation
An electronics team was preparing for an external EMC laboratory booking after seeing an unexpected emissions peak during informal bench work. The initial purchasing request combined a spectrum analyzer, an antenna, a LISN, and probe accessories without identifying which tool was intended for conducted screening, radiated screening, or fault localization.
What the team clarified
The review began with a repeatable DUT state: firmware mode, cable set, power source, load, enclosure configuration, and physical layout. The team then separated three questions: what returns through the power interface, what appears in a radiated setup, and where on the product or cable path the likely coupling source is located.
Procurement logic
The equipment brief required defined frequency coverage, measurement functions, a compatible LISN and limiter where conducted work applied, a suitable antenna path for screening, and a near-field probe set for localization. It also required trace storage, screenshots, limit-line handling, and export so that design revisions could be compared on the same basis.
Decision result
The team did not treat the bench as a certification replacement. Instead, it used the bench to reduce unknowns before the lab slot, rank mitigation changes, and pass a concise setup record to the laboratory. That avoided buying accessories that were impressive on a quote but unrelated to the actual failure path.
