Thermal Imaging for Switchgear Inspection: Recommended Camera Models
Choose a thermal camera for switchgear by calculating target coverage at working distance, then selecting optics, NETD, radiometric workflow, and reporting capability.

The decision target is usually a connection, not the whole panel
Switchgear thermography succeeds when the smallest decision target has enough pixels at the permitted working distance and is in focus. Write down the target size, viewing distance, access restrictions, expected temperature rise, surface condition, and required report fields before comparing detector resolution. Shiny busbars and lugs also require emissivity and reflected-temperature practice; a sharp image alone is not a temperature measurement.

The final model must be confirmed against the current regional data sheet, lens bundle, and calibration availability because thermal-camera options vary by market.
Parameters to purchase
- Lens and IFOV: Calculate pixels on the smallest lug or termination at the actual distance.
- NETD and temperature range: Choose sensitivity for the expected Delta-T and a validated range for the recorded temperature.
- Focus: Require manual, assisted, or laser-assisted focus that works across the route.
- Radiometry: Require full radiometric images, editable emissivity/reflected temperature, spot/area tools, and exportable reports.
- Route workflow: Require asset ID, image naming, trending fields, battery endurance, and a report template.
Acceptance test
Inspect a representative cabinet at the farthest approved distance. Confirm target focus, pixel coverage, image storage, emissivity adjustment, and the ability to create an asset-linked report. This is the correct time to decide whether a telephoto lens is required.
